The Color of Sound
the artistry of Michael Rios
– Saturday October 27th until November 15th –
An icon of San Francisco’s art culture for over 50 years, Michael Rios was decorating the city with a dazzling array murals and Fillmore posters before his relationship with Carlos Santana took off in the 1980s, culminating in album artwork for the album Supernatural that landed in the home of over 30 million households. From hand-printed tee shirts, album artwork, stage backdrops, and custom guitars, Michael’s vibrant work is indelibly intertwined with the music and history of the city he has washed in color.
Over the past five years, SF’s legendary Artist Emeritus has been the Artist in Residence of TODCO, the housing nonprofit that maintains 6M Arts. We are proud to show his recent and past works. His Soul of Soma collection, a variety of San Francisco-themed pieces, prints of murals and concert posters, as well as screen prints, photographs, and original paintings all can be viewed until the closing date, November 15th.
Who We Are
6M Community Arts is a program of Tenants and Owners Development Corporation (TODCO), whose Community Arts Initiative aims to empower residents of South of Market (SOMA) by facilitating access to artistic tools and education, providing creative spaces for social engagement, and sponsoring public art projects which celebrate the diversity and resilience of the neighborhood.
We work with 6th on 7th Photography Workshop to pool resources for creative projects and focus on ways to champion the psychological health benefits on artistic involvement.
Where We Are
We’re located on the first floor of the historic Bayanihan House, an affordable housing SRO (single-room occupancy) building on Sixth and Mission.
